HD Hyundai Expands Nuclear Tech to Car Carriers

HD Hyundai is advancing its nuclear propulsion ambitions by expanding the application of small modular reactor (SMR) technology from container ships to car carriers. This strategic move aims to leverage the high safety and efficiency of molten salt reactors (MSR) for long-term, carbon-neutral maritime operations.

Nuclear Propulsion in Maritime

The conceptual design for a large pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) using MSR technology has received approval in principle from Lloyd’s Register. This design was developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, with operational plans proposed by Hyundai Glovis.

"We are showcasing leading eco-friendly vessel technology in cooperation with major shipping companies and classification societies," said HD Hyundai.

Market Growth and Challenges

The global maritime car carrier market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 3.8% from 2024 to 2030, reaching approximately $4.5 billion by 2030. This growth is driven by increased exports of finished vehicles, rising electric vehicle cargo volumes, and the demand for eco-friendly vessels.

However, the European Maritime Safety Agency highlights challenges such as production, safety, security, education, liability, and insurance systems that must be addressed before nuclear propulsion can be widely adopted.

Implications for Shippers and Operators

Shippers and operators should prepare for potential shifts in vessel technology and regulatory landscapes. Engaging with stakeholders like classification societies and regulatory bodies will be crucial to navigating these changes. Additionally, investing in training and infrastructure to support nuclear propulsion could provide a competitive edge.
