BNSF expands intermodal rail service between Phoenix and North Texas for shippers

BNSF Railway has expanded its intermodal rail service connecting the Phoenix metropolitan area with Dallas-Fort Worth, giving shippers a six-days-a-week rail option with transit of just over three days from train departure to availability, according to FreightWaves. The carrier said the enhanced service is aimed at converting over-the-road truck freight to rail between two of the Southwest's fastest-growing markets, ahead of the domestic peak shipping season.

What changed

BNSF said the expanded service will now run six days a week, driven by rising customer demand. The route operates through the Alliance Intermodal Facility in North Texas, which the company said provides access to a broad transportation ecosystem, substantial warehouse and distribution capacity, and connectivity to major consumer markets across the United States. BNSF positioned the lane as faster and more economical than highway, with transit time just over three days from departure to availability. Jon Gabriel, BNSF Group Vice President of Consumer Products, said in a release:

"We're seeing more customers looking for capacity solutions as we head into the domestic peak shipping season, while continuing to manage their transportation costs. This expanded service responds to rapidly changing market conditions and offers a solution that combines reliable transit, access to key markets and the advantages of intermodal transportation."

Service detail BNSF Phoenix–North Texas intermodal
Route Phoenix metro to Dallas-Fort Worth / North Texas
Frequency Six days per week
Transit time Just over three days, from train departure to availability
North Texas gateway Alliance Intermodal Facility
Arizona expansion Logistics Park Phoenix (LPP), second BNSF intermodal facility in the Phoenix area
LPP first phase opening Early 2027

Why it matters

The expansion comes as railroads compete aggressively for freight traditionally moved by truck, particularly ahead of the domestic peak shipping season when shippers face tighter capacity and higher highway rates, FreightWaves reported. BNSF's emphasis on transit reliability and frequency positions the Phoenix–Dallas-Fort Worth lane as a key corridor in the carrier's intermodal network. For shippers, the service offers a scheduled rail alternative to truck on a lane connecting two fast-growing metro areas, with six-day frequency designed to support peak-season volume.

Arizona buildout

The service expansion also sets the stage for future growth in Arizona. Construction is underway on Logistics Park Phoenix (LPP), BNSF's second intermodal facility in the Phoenix area, according to the company. The first phase of LPP is slated to open in early 2027 and is designed to support continued economic growth and supply chain investment in the region. LPP is part of BNSF's broader logistics park strategy, which links industrial development with intermodal infrastructure to create additional supply chain efficiencies, BNSF said.

Gabriel added: "As freight capacity and demand continue to evolve, we remain focused on investing in solutions that help customers grow with BNSF. The Phoenix and North Texas markets represent significant opportunities for shippers, and this service expansion is another step toward providing the infrastructure and transportation solutions needed to support that growth."

Watch list

  • Domestic peak shipping season: BNSF said customers are looking for capacity solutions heading into the season while managing transportation costs, a dynamic that supported the move to six-day weekly service.
  • Logistics Park Phoenix: Construction is underway; the first phase is scheduled to open in early 2027 as BNSF's second Phoenix-area intermodal facility.
  • Alliance Intermodal Facility: The North Texas gateway provides warehouse and distribution capacity and access to major U.S. consumer markets, according to BNSF.
  • Rapidly changing market conditions: BNSF said the expanded service responds to rapidly changing market conditions, according to Gabriel's statement.

Intermodal Demand Surges, but Drayage Capacity Squeeze Caps STG Logistics' Growth

STG Logistics CEO Geoff Anderman told FreightWaves that drayage capacity constraints forced the company to leave intermodal volume on the table in Q2, with the squeeze persisting into summer. The company exited Chapter 11 in July with 90% less debt and new owners Fortress, Fidelity and Invesco. Anderman identified over-the-road trucking, not rival intermodal providers, as the main competition.
