India Launches AI-Powered Smart Warehousing for 216 CWC Grain Storage Warehouses

Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi on June 18 launched a smart warehousing system for 216 Central Warehousing Corporation grain storage warehouses, integrating AI, IoT, and automation for real-time monitoring. The system aims to enhance transparency, reduce manual intervention, and prevent foodgrain diversion under the Public Distribution System (PDS). The Food Corporation of India plans to implement similar technology in 150 warehouses by October.

India Launches AI-Powered Smart Warehousing for 216 CWC Grain Storage Warehouses

India's Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) has completed the rollout of a smart warehousing system across all 216 grain storage warehouses, enabling real-time monitoring of inventory and operations using artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, announced Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday.

Context and Rationale

The initiative is part of the government's efforts to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) and ensure food security. Food grains stored in CWC and Food Corporation of India (FCI) warehouses are meant for distribution to 79 crore beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act. The smart warehousing system was introduced to ensure transparency and check any diversion of foodgrains for non-PDS purposes, according to officials. Joshi termed smart warehousing a food security initiative apart from a technology infusion.

Smart Warehousing Features

The system deploys a suite of AI and IoT-driven technologies across CWC's foodgrain and general warehouses. Key components include:

Technology Function
FASTag and ANPR-based gate automation Integration with VAHAN-SARATHI databases for vehicle tracking
Smart locking system Controlled godown access
AI-based bag counting Automated inventory counts
Face recognition-enabled quality inspections Authorized personnel verification
IoT gas sensors Monitoring carbon dioxide and Phosphine levels
AI surveillance Fire, smoke, and rodent detection

These technologies are integrated with the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, generating automated records, real-time alerts and multi-level operational dashboards.

Operational Impact

According to Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, the system ensures foodgrains are stored in a scientific manner and not susceptible to proliferation. The interventions reduce manual dependence at critical points such as gates, weighbridges and godowns, while creating cleaner records, faster movement, stronger controls and better monitoring from the warehouse level to the ministry. For logistics operators handling grain movements, this means reduced dwell times, lower risk of theft or spoilage, and digitized documentation that can streamline audits and compliance.

FCI Rollout Plan

Sanjeev Chopra also stated that FCI will implement the smart warehousing system in 150 of its warehouses by October. This parallel deployment will expand the real-time monitoring network to cover a significant portion of India's strategic grain reserves, further tightening the supply chain for PDS commodities.

Broader Implications

During the event, Minister Joshi indicated that after delisting 2.21 crore ineligible holders from the PDS, there is scope for issuing nearly 3 crore fresh ration cards to eligible beneficiaries. The Centre provides, free of cost, 5 kg of rice or wheat per month to each beneficiary under the National Food Security Act. The enhanced transparency from smart warehousing supports this process by ensuring that only entitled recipients receive subsidized grain.

For freight forwarders, 3PL operators, and warehouse managers, the deployment of AI and IoT in government warehouses sets a benchmark for digitized inventory management. The integration of ANPR, smart locks, and AI surveillance demonstrates how automation can reduce manual errors and improve security—practices that can be adopted in private sector warehousing to enhance efficiency and client confidence.
