Apple's Assistive Access Feature Turns iPhone into a Kid-Friendly Dumb Phone

Apple's Assistive Access, introduced in iOS 17, allows parents to create a simplified, browser-free iPhone for children. Unlike standard Screen Time restrictions, it prevents web access via links, making it an ideal free alternative to paid dumb-phone apps. WIRED's Jeremy White details the setup process and benefits.

Apple's Assistive Access Feature Turns iPhone into a Kid-Friendly Dumb Phone

Parents face a dilemma: giving a child a smartphone for safety while limiting internet and social media exposure. Standard parental controls often fail—children bypass Safari restrictions by opening links from messages. Apple offers a free, built-in solution via Assistive Access, a feature originally designed for users with cognitive disabilities, that can turn an iPhone into a safe, restricted device.

The Problem with Standard Restrictions

According to a WIRED article by Jeremy White, standard iOS Screen Time limitations are insufficient. While you can restrict the Safari app, children find workarounds: “asking friends to message them links, which can bypass restrictions when opened.” Third-party apps like Dumb Phone for iPhones and Minimalist Phone for Android exist, but they charge for removing apps—a logic White finds questionable.

Assistive Access: A Hidden Alternative

Introduced with iOS 17, Assistive Access provides a simplified iOS experience: large, friendly tiles replace standard icons, and the system is designed for caregivers. Crucially, it allows complete blocking of web browsing. When Assistive Access is active, the phone treats any link in a message as plain text, preventing accidental navigation. Users must specifically add internet-enabled apps like Safari to the allowed list, which is turned off by default.

Feature Comparison: Assistive Access vs. Standard Screen Time

Feature Standard Screen Time Assistive Access
Block Safari Can restrict app, but links bypass restrictions Blocks web browsing; links become plain text
Contact restrictions Limited Choose everyone, contacts only, or favorites
Interface Standard iOS Large tiles, simplified layout
Cost Free Free
Designed for Parental controls Cognitive disabilities; suitable for kids

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > scroll to General section > tap Assistive Access.
  2. Tap Set Up Assistive Access > Continue.
  3. Choose appearance: rows or grid (grid recommended for large tiles).
  4. Select allowed apps by tapping the green plus icon. Omit Safari or any browser to block internet.
  5. For Messages or Calls, specify who the child can contact: everyone, only contacts, or selected favorites.
  6. Optionally enable time display on lock screen, keypad, or speaker.

Broader Implications

Assistive Access fills a gap in Apple's ecosystem, offering a free, robust alternative to paid dumb-phone apps. It leverages existing accessibility infrastructure to solve a common parenting need—without ongoing subscriptions. For families already in the Apple ecosystem, this feature provides a controlled, safe smartphone experience for children, preserving essential functions like maps and tracking while blocking unfettered internet access.

How Apple's iOS 27 Boosts Older iPhone Speed and Extends Device Longevity

Apple's upcoming iOS 27 update brings platform stability improvements that make older iPhones, including the iPhone 11 from 2019, run faster and more responsively. Key gains include up to 30% faster app launches, 80% faster AirDrop transfers, and 70% faster photo library loading, achieved through CPU scheduler optimizations. The move supports Apple's services business—which hit $31 billion in revenue—and reinforces brand loyalty, though older devices miss new Apple Intelligence features.
