Assam's renowned second flush tea is witnessing a significant price surge this year, driven by favorable weather conditions that have resulted in an exceptional quality crop. The Guwahati tea auction center reported an average price increase of ₹33.86 per kg from April 1 to May 31, 2026, compared to the same period last year.
Favorable Weather Boosts Quality
The tea industry in Assam, a leading producer of the brew, has benefited from favorable weather conditions this year, resulting in a high-quality second flush crop. Bidyananda Barkakoty, Adviser of the North Eastern Tea Association (NETA), highlighted the distinctive taste and character of Assam's second flush tea, which is globally renowned for its bold, full-bodied liquor and rich malty sweetness.
Production Insights
Despite a 38% decrease in production during the January-March period compared to the previous year, the April-May 2026 production reached 106.54 million kg. However, overall production from January to May 2026 is expected to be lower than the previous year due to exceptionally high production in early 2025.
Demand and Price Dynamics
The strong demand for quality Assam tea is reflected in the rising prices. Green leaf prices vary based on quality, with leaves having a 45% fine leaf count fetching around ₹45 per kg, while those exceeding 50% fetch ₹50 per kg and above. This demand is driven by the tea's unique flavor profile, making it highly sought after in global markets.
"No tea in the world can match the distinctive taste and character of pure second flush Assam tea," said Bidyananda Barkakoty.
Price Outlook
Looking ahead, the market anticipates continued strong demand for Assam's second flush tea, with prices likely to remain elevated. Key data releases from the USDA and FAO will provide further insights into global tea market trends.
