India's agriculture sector and food industry are increasingly under pressure to adapt to the growing impacts of climate change. Extreme heat, unpredictable monsoons, and severe groundwater stress are posing significant risks to food supply chains across the country.
Climate Challenges and Adaptation
According to Divya Sharma, India Executive Director of the Climate Group, resilience in agriculture and food sectors is urgent. "Resilience in agriculture and food sectors is urgent and requires everyone's participation—from farmers to large businesses, industry associations, and the government," she stated at the Climate Group Asia Action Summit held in Singapore.
"The coalition is convening key actors across businesses and industry associations to increase demand and supply of nutritious, low emissions, sustainable food products," Sharma added.
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
India ranks as the ninth most-vulnerable country to climate change according to the Climate Risk Index (CRI). The country's agriculture sector must address these vulnerabilities by adopting sustainable practices and technologies.
- Extreme Weather: Unpredictable monsoons disrupt planting and harvest schedules.
- Water Stress: Severe groundwater depletion affects irrigation and crop yields.
Demand for Sustainable Practices
The demand for sustainable and low-emission food products is rising. The Climate Group is working with businesses through global campaigns such as RE100 and EV100 to promote renewable energy and electric vehicles, which indirectly support sustainable agriculture.
| Challenge | Impact on Agriculture |
|---|---|
| Extreme Heat | Reduced crop yields |
| Unpredictable Monsoons | Disrupted planting cycles |
| Groundwater Stress | Limited irrigation |
Future Outlook
India's leadership in renewable energy and international coalitions like the International Solar Alliance demonstrates its commitment to sustainability. The country aims to achieve 500 GW of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. As India progresses towards its Net Zero goal before 2070, the agriculture sector's adaptation will be crucial.
Upcoming data releases from the USDA and FAO will provide further insights into global agricultural trends and India's position in the market.
