Indian Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are currently facing significant financial challenges, with losses amounting to nearly Rs 700 on every domestic LPG cylinder sold. This situation persists despite the government's efforts to bolster supply through increased domestic production and strategic import agreements.
Supply Dynamics
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reported a stable supply of LPG across India. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the ministry, highlighted that domestic LPG production has been ramped up significantly, with approximately 54 TMT of LPG evacuated from various sources within the country. This increase in production is part of a broader strategy to bridge the demand-supply gap, which also includes securing import tie-ups.
Demand Trends
LPG demand has moderated due to several factors. Reduced consumption from commercial and industrial sectors, changes in booking cycles, and the implementation of delivery authentication systems have all contributed to this trend. "There has been a reduction because our commercial and industrial LPG... and the other reason is the booking period that we managed, I mean 25 days and 45 days," said Sharma.
Market Stability
Despite geopolitical tensions in West Asia, India's energy supplies remain unaffected. The ministry assures that crude oil, LPG, and natural gas supplies are stable, with adequate stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG available. Refineries are operating at optimal levels, ensuring consistent supply.
Future Outlook
The government continues to expand the piped natural gas (PNG) network, with significant progress reported since March 2026. Over 8.82 lakh PNG connections have been gasified, with infrastructure in place for an additional 2.98 lakh connections. This expansion is part of a broader effort to enhance energy accessibility and reduce reliance on LPG cylinders.
| Metric | Current Status |
|---|---|
| Domestic LPG Production | 54 TMT |
| PNG Connections Gasified | 8.82 lakh |
| Additional PNG Infrastructure | 2.98 lakh |
"Despite the ongoing situation in West Asia, supplies of crude oil, LPG, and natural gas remain stable," said Sujata Sharma.
The outlook for LPG prices remains uncertain, with upcoming data releases from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas expected to provide further insights into market dynamics.
