Monsoon Slowdown Expected in North-West India Due to Western Disturbance

The monsoon, which has been vigorous along India's west coast, is expected to slow down in the north-west due to an approaching western disturbance. This development could impact agricultural activities in the region.

Weather Patterns and Monsoon Activity

The monsoon remains active from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra through Panaji in Goa, Mangaluru in Karnataka, to Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. However, the sustainability of this heavy-rain regime is in question. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western disturbance is expected to affect the Himalayan region, leading to a potential slowdown in monsoon progress.

Cyclonic Circulation and Rainfall

A cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea is strengthening monsoon flows across Goa, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. However, Mumbai is experiencing weaker winds, which may delay the full onset of the monsoon. Despite this, thundershowers are expected in Mumbai due to the approaching western disturbance.

Impact on Agriculture

Heavy rainfall is forecasted to be confined to the coastal belt from Panaji through Karwar and Bhatkal to Mangaluru and Kannur. This pattern suggests a decrease in rainfall intensity and spatial extent in the coming days, which could affect agricultural activities in the interior regions.

Future Weather Developments

Forecasters are monitoring a potential circulation over the Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha coast by June 22-23. If this develops, it could reinvigorate the monsoon's advance into Central India and northern parts of the west coast.

"The monsoon's progress is likely to remain sluggish during this period," according to the IMD.

Implications for Commodity Traders

Commodity traders and procurement teams should closely monitor these weather developments as they could impact crop yields and agricultural commodity prices. The potential slowdown in monsoon progress may lead to supply disruptions, affecting market dynamics.

Region Weather Impact
West Coast Vigorous Monsoon
North-West India Sluggish Progress
Bay of Bengal Potential Circulation

Understanding these weather patterns is crucial for making informed decisions in the commodities market.
