Free Trade Pacts to Boost Furniture Exports and Domestic Manufacturing: Industry

Free trade pacts (FTAs) will provide significant impetus to furniture exports and domestic manufacturing in India, according to industry representatives cited by the Economic Times. Duty concessions under these agreements are expected to offer preferential market access, encourage capacity expansion, and attract fresh investments.

FTAs in Place and Under Negotiation

India has implemented FTAs with Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, the EFTA bloc (European Free Trade Association comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland), and Oman. It has signed such pacts with New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and announced the conclusion of negotiations with the European Union.

The country is also negotiating similar trade pacts with several other economies:

  • Israel
  • Canada
  • Peru
  • Chile
  • Gulf Cooperation Council (Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia)
  • Eurasian Economic Union (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia)

Industry Voices and Corporate Actions

Ketan Thakkar, Managing Director of Gujarat-based Nipponply Industries, said: "These agreements will help us provide huge export opportunities. We have already started our exports."

Nipponply Industries has launched AURA, a range of premium home and office organisation products. Director Smit Thakkar explained that the products are made from the company's patented Nipponglint wood veneer technology for enhanced durability and aesthetics, and "come with flame-retardant surface systems and scratch and stain-resistant surfaces."

Rakesh Mohan Joshi, Vice-Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), said FTAs have "opened immense export opportunities for the Indian furniture sector" and urged the industry to "grab this opportunity."

Amiet R Barot, Founder of Bharat Cluster Ventures Private Limited (BCVPL), shared that the company is exporting to Europe and the US and exploring other markets. He noted that BCVPL is developing the Maharashtra Global Furniture City (MAHA-GFC), an integrated ecosystem for the furniture fraternity focused on manufacturing, trade, exports, and logistics.

Earlier this month, IKEA, the Swedish furniture retailer, announced setting up a new product development company in India to support the creation of affordable and locally relevant products for domestic and global markets.

Market Data and Projections

As per estimates, the Indian furniture market was valued at over USD 30 billion. India currently ranks 16th in the global market for furniture exports.

According to the Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI), the global furniture industry is expected to reach USD 872.5 billion by 2030. India contributes over one per cent to global furniture exports.

The major export destinations for Indian furniture are the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Implications for Importers, Exporters, and Trade Policy Professionals

The expanding network of FTAs offers Indian furniture exporters preferential tariff access to key markets, strengthening their competitive position against rivals from non-FTA countries. For importers, duty concessions on raw materials and components may lower input costs for domestic manufacturing. Trade policy analysts should monitor the progress of ongoing negotiations with major economies like the EU, UK, and GCC, as finalised deals could reshape trade flows and supply chains in the furniture sector. The development of dedicated furniture hubs like MAHA-GFC signals growing infrastructure support for export-oriented manufacturing.
