India-Canada FTA Talks Near Conclusion: Goyal

India and Canada are making significant strides towards finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2026. Piyush Goyal, India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, expressed optimism about concluding the negotiations during his visit to Canada. The agreement, known as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), is expected to enhance trade relations between the two countries.

Progress in Negotiations

Goyal, speaking at a business event in Toronto, highlighted the progress made in the negotiations. "The prime ministers of India and Canada have tasked us to finalize a comprehensive economic partnership agreement before the end of the year," he stated. The third round of negotiations is currently underway in Ottawa from May 25 to 29.

Economic Opportunities

The FTA aims to reduce import duties on a wide range of goods and ease norms to promote trade in services. Key sectors include energy, agri-food, technology, and education. Goyal emphasized the potential for Canadian critical minerals to support India's manufacturing sectors, such as electric vehicles and electronics.

"We're negotiating a free trade deal with India. This will be a game changer for Canadian workers and businesses, unlocking a massive new market," said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Benefits for Both Nations

The agreement is expected to open up new markets for Canadian businesses and provide Indian companies access to Canadian resources. Goyal noted that India's digital public infrastructure, like UPI, could reduce transaction costs in Canada. The Indian delegation includes leaders from sectors such as pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and artificial intelligence.

Timeline and Expectations

Both countries aim to conclude the FTA negotiations before the G20 Summit in November. The agreement is anticipated to significantly boost bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately USD 6 billion annually.

Sector Opportunities for Collaboration
Energy Critical minerals, renewables
Agri-food Export-import of commodities
Technology AI, telecommunications
Education Dual-degree programs

The successful conclusion of the FTA will mark a significant milestone in India-Canada economic relations, fostering growth and collaboration across multiple sectors.
