India-US Trade Agreement Nears Completion

The India-US interim trade agreement is on the brink of completion, with 99% of the terms finalized, according to United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. The agreement, which is expected to be concluded within the next few weeks, marks a significant step in strengthening the economic relationship between the two nations.

Key Negotiations

A US trade delegation led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch is currently in New Delhi for a three-day round of talks with Indian negotiators headed by Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary Darpan Jain. These discussions are crucial for resolving the remaining issues in the agreement.

"The India-US relationship is the most consequential partnership of modern times," said Sergio Gor at the Citi 2026 India Conference in Mumbai.

Economic Impact

The proposed agreement is expected to create new opportunities for businesses and workers in both countries. Notably, more than 40% of generic medicines used in the United States are sourced from India, highlighting the importance of this trade relationship.

Broader Trade Context

Recent US tariff measures, part of a broader global trade review process, are not specifically aimed at India. Sergio Gor expressed confidence that the agreement would further strengthen economic ties between the two countries, despite these measures.

Future Prospects

The TRUST initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, underscores the collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, and trusted supply chains. This initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of global trade.

The expansion plans of major American companies in India further illustrate the growing economic interdependence between the two nations.
