A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal within 5-6 days, potentially reviving widespread rainfall. Despite a shift in the monsoon rain belt away from central and west India, reservoir storage, sowing progress, and the likelihood of another revival suggest minimal cause for concern for India's farmers and crops, according to experts quoted by businessline.

Reservoir Storage Holds Steady

Live storage in 166 major reservoirs monitored by the Central Water Commission stood at 47.72 billion cubic metres (bcm) as of July 2, nearly matching the normal of 48.40 bcm, according to the source. This near-normal level provides a buffer against the June rainfall deficit, which raised initial fears of a drought.

Sowing Window and Farmer Options

KJ Ramesh, scientist, meteorologist, and former director-general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), told businessline that the trajectory of kharif sowing between July 1 and mid-August will offer the clearest indication of the season's outcome. This period is the principal sowing window for most rain-fed crops. Even in a good monsoon year, 15-20% of India's geographical area typically remains rain-deficient, he noted.

Farmers in areas where June rainfall was scanty still have options, including switching to short-duration crop varieties. Ramesh argued: "True manifestation of monsoon is on ground. People tend to look at percentages and jump to conclusions. Instead, look at reservoir storage and rain-fed crop acreages."

Fresh Low-Pressure Area Expected

An added source of comfort is the likelihood of a fresh low-pressure area forming over the north Bay of Bengal (head Bay) within the next five to six days, Ramesh revealed. This system may develop slightly farther north than the previous rain-bearing low that operated near Balasore in Odisha, but should still be well placed to trigger another spell of widespread rainfall across eastern and central India.

Its formation would signal that the larger ocean-atmosphere background remains favourable for sustaining the monsoon, Ramesh pointed out. Warming of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, now reinforced by conditions over the western Pacific, is creating an environment conducive to the emergence of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). A positive IOD has historically acted as a supportive companion to the monsoon and, if it develops during the current season, could offset much of the damage caused by the disastrous June rainfall deficit.

Expert Perspectives on Monsoon Break

DS Pai, former head of Climate Research and Services at the IMD, said a typical monsoon break lasts between five and seven days. Whether the current lull develops into a full-fledged break will become clearer over the next few days, particularly if rainfall weakens further over the west coast and central India. The evolution of the next Bay low assumes added significance, as it could determine whether rainfall revives quickly or a dry spell persists.

Ramesh believes India may still finish with an overall rainfall deficit. Yet, emerging from a year widely projected to be a super El Niño year without major collateral damage would itself be noteworthy. Widespread rainfall received over the past week has gone a long way towards easing concerns over drinking water availability. For instance, water tankers—once a familiar sight across drought-prone regions such as Marathwada and Vidarbha—are yet to appear in large numbers.

Implications for Commodity Traders

For commodity traders and agribusiness executives, the near-normal reservoir storage and the potential for a positive IOD suggest that India's kharif crop output may not suffer as severely as initially feared. Key rain-fed crops—such as soybean, cotton, pulses, and coarse grains—depend heavily on the July-August sowing window. As long as rainfall revives in the coming days and covers critical catchments, acreage and yield prospects could stabilise, reducing the risk of supply-driven price spikes in domestic markets. Traders should monitor the formation of the next Bay low and weekly reservoir updates for near-term direction.
