Its formation would signal that the larger ocean-atmosphere background remains favourable for sustaining the monsoon, Ramesh pointed out. Warming of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, now reinforced by conditions over the western Pacific, is creating an environment conducive to the emergence of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). A positive IOD has historically acted as a supportive companion to the monsoon and, if it develops during the current season, could offset much of the damage caused by the disastrous June rainfall deficit.

DS Pai, former head of Climate Research and Services at the IMD, said a typical monsoon break lasts between five and seven days. Ramesh believes India may still finish with an overall rainfall deficit.
