Wheat Procurement Surpasses Target with 17% Surge

India's wheat procurement for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season has surged by 17%, reaching over 35 million tonnes, surpassing the target of 34.5 MT. This increase also marks a significant rise from the previous year's procurement of 30 MT.

Key Drivers of Procurement Surge

The surge in procurement was primarily driven by robust domestic production of 120.65 MT, despite challenges such as unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies facilitated higher procurement by purchasing wheat at the minimum support price (MSP), as mandi rates remained below the MSP.

State-wise Procurement Details

  • Punjab: Procurement rose to 12.1 MT from 11.9 MT.
  • Madhya Pradesh: A sharp increase to 10.4 MT from 7.8 MT.
  • Haryana: Increased to 8.1 MT from 7 MT.
  • Uttar Pradesh: Nearly doubled to 1.7 MT from 1 MT.
  • Rajasthan: Improved to 2.4 MT from 1.9 MT.

Implications for Demand

The increased procurement supports the requirements under the National Food Security Act and other welfare schemes. The procurement season, which runs from April through March, saw most activity in the initial months.

"Wheat procurement has crossed 35 million tonnes so far this season. We have exceeded the target," a senior food ministry official stated.

Outlook and Future Data Releases

Looking ahead, the focus will be on monitoring weather patterns and their impact on future production. Upcoming data from the USDA and FAO will provide further insights into global wheat supply and demand dynamics.
