India's digital logistics tracking platform crosses 10 crore EXIM container tracking milestone

India's Logistics Data Bank (LDB) has crossed 10 crore export-import (EXIM) containers tracked since its 2016 launch, according to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. The platform logs over 1.5 crore monthly container queries and provides dwell time, transit duration and port performance analytics via RFID, IoT and Big Data. LDB 2.0, rolled out in September 2025, adds high-seas export cargo tracking and multimodal shipment visibility.

India's digital logistics tracking platform crosses 10 crore EXIM container tracking milestone

India's Logistics Data Bank (LDB) has crossed the 10 crore mark in export-import (EXIM) container tracking since its launch in 2016, giving freight forwarders, ocean carriers, port authorities and customs brokers a single digital record of container movement across the country, according to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

10 crore containers tracked since 2016

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry reported that the Logistics Data Bank has tracked 10 crore export-import containers since its launch in 2016. The digital platform provides end-to-end visibility of container movements across the country through technology-based tracking mechanisms. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said efficient logistics is crucial to strengthening domestic manufacturing and expanding India's presence across global trade corridors, and highlighted the role of technological interventions in modernising supply chains.

The tracking of 10 crore containers through the Logistics Data Bank is an important milestone in India's logistics journey. — Piyush Goyal, Commerce Minister

"Technology is helping us make logistics simpler, faster and more efficient, while improving the competitiveness of Indian industry," Goyal added.

Dwell time, transit data for bottleneck detection

By integrating RFID, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and Cloud computing, the platform generates real-time visibility and analytics on dwell time, transit duration, and port performance. These data points assist stakeholders — freight forwarders, terminal operators, container freight stations (CFSs) and inland container depots (ICDs) — in identifying operational bottlenecks. The platform's contribution to container management has also drawn recognition in the World Bank's Logistics Performance Index (LPI), according to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

On usage volume, the platform logs an average of over 1.5 crore container queries each month through its single-window portal. The tracking infrastructure was further expanded in September 2025 with the rollout of LDB 2.0, which enabled high-seas tracking of export cargo and introduced multimodal shipment visibility.

Platform operator and stakeholder network

Rajat Kumar Saini, IAS, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) and Chairman of NICDC Logistics Data Services Limited (NLDSL), noted the platform's evolution: "Reaching 10 crore containers is a proud moment in the journey of LDB. What began with the objective of bringing visibility to EXIM container movement has today become an important digital platform for India's logistics sector."

Saini said the achievement was possible through the continued cooperation of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, ports, terminals, CFSs and ICDs. NLDSL was incorporated on December 30, 2015, as a joint venture between the Government of India, through the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT), and Japan's NEC Corporation to implement ICT-based logistics solutions, including the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP).

Watch list

Saini said the next phase will focus on further strengthening LDB through analytics and new technologies to meet the evolving needs of India's logistics sector. For operators, LDB 2.0's high-seas export tracking and multimodal shipment visibility — rolled out in September 2025 — extend the platform's single-window coverage beyond Indian ports to cargo in transit, according to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. The platform logs over 1.5 crore container queries each month, and its contribution to container management has been recognised in the World Bank's Logistics Performance Index, making dwell-time and port-performance data a continuing reference point for shippers routing EXIM cargo through India's ports and inland depots.

Panama Canal Draft Cut to 47.5 Feet Threatens East Coast Port Volumes

According to FreightWaves, the Panama Canal Authority will reduce maximum vessel draft from 49.5 feet to 47.5 feet by September 3, cutting payload capacity for neo-panamax ships on Asia-U.S. East and Gulf Coast routes. MSC and CMA CGM have already imposed Canal-related surcharges, while low water on the Rhine River is pressuring European inland barge networks.
