India Reconsiders Scotch Tariff in UK Trade Deal

India is currently reassessing the tariff concessions on Scotch whisky as part of its trade agreement with the United Kingdom. This review comes amid concerns over steel quotas and duties that have not been addressed by the UK. The trade deal, which was initially scheduled for implementation in May, has been deferred indefinitely.

Trade Deal Stalemate

The Indian government is considering rebalancing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the UK. A senior government official stated, "We have to rebalance the FTA... We haven't made up our mind, but we can consider action on certain goods like Scotch, unless they roll back the steel duty."

Diplomatic Engagements

Peter Kyle, the UK trade secretary, is scheduled to meet with Piyush Goyal, India's commerce and industry minister, to resolve the ongoing deadlock. The UK aims to advance a trading relationship already valued at £48 billion ($56.5 billion).

"As global conflicts including the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz are causing economic shocks across the world's biggest economies, Peter Kyle sees advancing the UK's vital economic partnership with India as a key priority, with significant mutual benefit," the UK statement highlighted.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

India is also seeking clarity on the UK's planned Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which is set to be implemented in January. The lack of clarity on this mechanism is another point of contention that could affect the trade agreement.

The ongoing negotiations and potential changes to the trade agreement underscore the complexities of international trade relationships and the impact of policy changes on bilateral agreements.
