India and US Engage in Trade Dialogue Amid Proposed Tariffs

India is currently in discussions with the United States concerning proposed tariffs under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974. This development follows investigations by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) against sixty economies, including India, regarding their import measures.

Proposed Tariffs and Framework Agreement

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has confirmed ongoing engagement with the US to address these proposed tariffs. The tariffs, which are not yet finalized, could impact a wide range of products, although items under Section 232 tariffs and certain other products are excluded. A special mechanism is proposed for textile and apparel products, allowing a certain volume of imports at lower tariff rates.

"The proposed tariffs are not yet final, and stakeholders can submit requests to participate in public hearings by the 22nd of this month," stated the Ministry.

Public Hearings and Stakeholder Engagement

Stakeholders have until the 6th of next month to submit written comments, with public hearings scheduled for the 7th of July. This timeline allows for comprehensive stakeholder engagement and input into the tariff proposals.

Impact on Bilateral Trade

The discussions are part of a broader effort to finalize a framework agreement announced in February. This agreement aims to strengthen trade relations between India and the US, potentially mitigating the impact of the proposed tariffs.

Date Event Description
June 22 Deadline Requests for public hearing participation
July 6 Deadline Submission of written comments
July 7 Event Public hearings

The outcome of these discussions and hearings will be crucial for importers and exporters in both countries, as they navigate the evolving trade landscape.
