India's Gherkin Exports Reach $307M in FY26 Amid US Tariffs

India's gherkin exports reached a record high of $307.61 million in the fiscal year 2025-26, despite facing tariff challenges in the United States, its largest market. This growth was driven by increased demand from countries such as Germany, Russia, and Canada.

Export Performance

The export volume of gherkins rose by 8% to 3.14 lakh tonnes, compared to 2.89 lakh tonnes in the previous year. The Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) reported that despite a 27% decline in export value to the US, amounting to $53.61 million, other markets compensated for this shortfall.

Market Dynamics

  • Germany: Imports increased to 35,070 tonnes, valued at $40.09 million.
  • Russia: Purchases rose to 43,627 tonnes, valued at $31.76 million.
  • Canada and the Netherlands: Also showed increased demand.

"The growth in value is attributed to the appreciating trend in currencies such as the dollar and euro," said GM Vinod, President of the Indian Gherkin Exporters Association.

Challenges and Resolutions

The US market experienced a significant drop due to initial tariff issues, with volumes declining by 23% to 52,768 tonnes. However, shipments resumed after resolving these issues. European markets like Spain and France reduced their imports due to higher domestic stocks.

Production and Export Model

Gherkin production is concentrated in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh, primarily under a contract farming model. Most of the produce is exported, as the domestic market for pickled cucumbers is negligible.

Country Volume (tonnes) Value ($ million)
US 52,768 53.61
Germany 35,070 40.09
Russia 43,627 31.76

The Indian gherkin industry continues to thrive, leveraging strong international demand and strategic market diversification.
