India, Venezuela Strengthen Energy Ties Amid Oil Diversification

India and Venezuela are forging stronger ties in the energy sector as part of India's strategic move to diversify its crude oil imports. This development comes amid ongoing supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Venezuela's Rising Role in India's Oil Supply

Venezuela has emerged as India's third-largest crude oil supplier this month, underscoring the growing importance of energy cooperation between the two nations. Rudrendra Tandon, MEA Secretary (East), emphasized the "perfect complementarity" in the energy sector, noting Venezuela's vast oil reserves and India's increasing crude consumption.

"Venezuela has already emerged as the third largest supplier, this month, so naturally today’s discussions focused on forging an energy partnership," Tandon stated.

Structured Energy Partnership

Discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez focused on developing a structured energy partnership covering both upstream and downstream sectors. While detailed deliberations remain confidential, the talks reflect a mutual interest in long-term collaboration.

Broader Economic Cooperation

Beyond energy, the discussions explored opportunities for Indian investment in sectors like mining, critical minerals, and pharmaceuticals. Venezuela views India as a stable partner, with both countries expressing interest in expanding commercial engagement.

High-Level Engagements

During her visit to India, Delcy Rodriguez engaged with key Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The visit aims to explore collaboration opportunities across various sectors, reinforcing the bilateral relationship.
